After many years of visiting the Etherton Gallery on our biannual trips to Tucson Arizona USA, I had the good fortune to bump into the director and owner or the gallery himself, Terry Etherton, I asked what was his favourite image that day – well that sparked an impromptu mini-tour around the gallery. Terry led us towards some timeless black and whites of the American Southwest, some old favourite acquisitions like Danny Lyon’s with the classic rebate edges showing that the print was not cropped and Alex Webb, a master of colour and serendipitous moment.
Terry also shared the work of his good friend and possibly even the reason he moved to Tucson the wonderful Louis Carlos Bernal whose exhibition I had only just seen at The Center of Photography. He mentioned so many names and stories my head was spinning.
Terry introduced us to some newer exhibits like Nightairs by Samual James as well as regulars including Kate Breakey an Australian artist who has been showing there for years.
Terry was a total joy to listen to, his utter appreciation for all the artists he’s been nurturing and supporting over the years just oozed out of him.
Later as I drooled over the library collection where one is permitted to look only at the spines. I discovered that this immense archive is just half of what belonged to Terry. He is currently seeking a buyer to sell this gold to.
So if you are interested give him a shout but there is a caveat, you can’t cherry- pick you have to take the whole lot and if you do then please may I come over and have a read !

Later I took a walk around the local area – see the photos below. Happy New Year to you !

Ha Moose! What an incredible summary of our visit to the Etherton Gallery and our subsequent enlightening and spontaneous meeting with Terry Etherton who provided us with a personal tour and narrative as to the gallery’s birth in Tucson in 1981; now a Tucson landmark.
I, your fortunate companion, was privy to your rapid exchange of knowledge and questions, to the enlightening personal narratives of each photographer shared by Terry, and to your recognition and appreciation for the photos and the artists, so beautifully displayed.
A day I shall revere as I was witness to not just you as my endearing sister in law, but to you as a gifted photographer, sharing your contagious passion and joy as to all it encompasses. And then, given the perfect light of the day, to watch as you as you fluttered to and fro, capturing all the uniqueness and beauty of the surrounding “Barrio Viejo.” Your photos are amazing. As you are. Thank you for a memorable day and valuable insight.
Hey Moose. I love this post so much. Makes me long to go there. I have a book of Danny Lyon photos that I bought from the Photographer’s Gallery when I first moved to London. Very inspiring. As are your images here.
